Editors' Choice

The Cure have taken four years to record their thirteenth studio album, the follow-up to 2004’s self titled album The Cure. But finally the band, known for the king of gloom, Robert Smith, and chart topping tracks like “Lovesong”, “Just Like Heaven” and “Friday I’m in Love”, have announced that their new CD will appear on September 13, 2008.

13 Freakshows

In the meantime, the band is involved in a marketing campaign that sees a new special remix track released on the 13th of every month leading up the September drop date. The campaign began on May 13 with first single “The Only One” and continued in June with “Freakshow.” Both songs were produced by The Cure frontman Robert Smith and Keith Uddin.

Lead by Smith, the band has been one of the most enduring rock/goth/pop/dance bands since they released their first track “Boys Don't Cry” in 1979. Paying homage to the time when singles came on vinyl coupled with B-sides, each of The Cure’s new 13 remix singles comes complete with a B-side, “NY Trip” and "All Kinds Of Stuff" backing “The Only One” and “Freakshow” respectively. Each B-side is downloadable as a separate single from all online retailers and the band’s official website. Neither will appear on the new album.

The Only One

With lyrics reminiscent of the brilliant “Just Like Heaven” and a sound strikingly similar to material the band recorded in 1992 for their guitar-driven album Wish which includes “Friday I’m in Love”, this track can do no wrong. Upbeat and fun with a catchy chorus, “The Only One” holds its own against any of the band’s previous material.

NY Trip

The Cure have made some wonderful B-sides over the course of their career. Unfortunately this isn’t one of them. Draggy and boring, this is the kind of trip Little Britain’s Carol Beer would organize. (cough)

Freakshow

The downfall for a group like The Cure, whose career has spanned 4 decades is the comparison of new material to older output. This is the problem with “Freakshow.” Not only is this song a follow-up to the undeniably catchy “The Only One”, it’s rather a mess at first. After a few spins however, the funky beat seeps through the chaos and it’s a surprising delight.

All Kinds Of Stuff

If this wasn’t a Cure track but a song from a new band cutting its teeth, it could be excused as a blip on a path to perfection, instead it’s a tale of what can happen when a great band makes a terrible song. Luckily it’s a B-side and not an example of the kind of golden output this band is capable of producing.

Two new Cure singles along with B-sides are scheduled for release on July 13 and August 13. The new Cure album is scheduled for release September 13, 2008.
