Radiohead Snag 3 Grammy NominationsIn Rainbows up for Album of the Year, Best Alternative Music Album
The 51st Annual Grammy Awards nominations honour Radiohead's experimental In Rainbows with three nods including Album of the Year.
The Grammy Awards, now in its 51st year of awarding musicians with the most coveted trophy in the industry, have become notorious for their huge mistakes. And while it seems their rules are as pliable as rubber, they did at least recognise In Rainbows for its greatness. Technically In Rainbows shouldn’t have received the nomination. The album came out in October 2007 as a "pay what you want download" on Radiohead’s official website but its CD counterpart was released on January 1, 2008. Then again, using those same rubber rules, The Jonas Brothers, who have released three albums to date, received a Grammy nomination for best new artist award. In Rainbows Album of the YearThe winner of the Album of the Year should reflect a cultural collective, a disc that stands for its time as a musical postcard. In Rainbows became the first album that gave fans the choice of getting it for free, legally, or paying what they wanted. It came out without big label backing, and even gave the band their second top 40 hit in America. In Rainbows not only included great music, but stands as a cultural icon in an era of declining CD sales and digital downloading, easily becoming the most talked about album of 2007, er 2008. Having an album named Album of the Year not only guarantees further success for the winning disc, but also extra status for the performer. Winning a Grammy can be a career high, but more often than not the loser of a category becomes just as talked about. Last year Amy Winehouse earned six nominations for her phenomenal Back to Black CD and went home with a shopping cart full of trophies, except Album of the Year. Instead, that honour went to Herbie Hancock for River: The Joni Letters, a covers album. Herbie was never heard from again, while Amy… Grammy Nominations a House of CardsAt the 51st Grammy Awards, Radiohead's In Rainbows goes head to head with fellow British rockers Coldplay for their number one album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends, Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III, Ne-Yo's Year Of The Gentleman, and Raising Sand by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss. Since Radiohead broke the rules and came out on top, Coldplay had their most successful album to date, scoring a number one song and an iPod commercial, and Lil Wayne sold a million copies of his CD in its first week of release, The Grammy Award for album of the year will most likely go to the pairing of Robert Plant & Alison Krauss. Best Alternative Music AlbumIf Radiohead don't pick up the Album of the Year award they still stand a chance at going home with a statue. Album cut "House Of Cards" has been nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals along with Best Rock Song, a songwriter's award. In Rainbows has also been nominated for Best Alternative Music Album. Should the British experimental group take home their trophies, they’ll update the pair already on display on their mantle. In 2000, at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards, they took home Best Alternative Music Album for Kid A, and in 1997, at the 40th Annual Grammy Awards, they walked away with their first statue for Best Alternative Music Performance for their album OK Computer. The 51st Annual Grammy Awards will be broadcast live on American television on February 8, 2008.
