Passion Pit's Debut EPChunk of Change Released September 16, 2008Sep 13, 2009 Lindsay Dellinger
The laptop created debut EP from the Cambridge, Massachusetts band, Passion Pit, available on iTunes, includes seven tracks of noteworthy synthesized electropop.
First impressions are important and the album, Chunk of Change, released on New York City's Frenchkiss Records label made a very decent impression. The Valentine's Day SongsInterestingly enough, the initial four songs on the album were written by lead singer, Michael Angelakos, as a Valentine's Day gift to his then girlfriend. “I've Got Your Number,” “Cuddle Fuddle,” “Smile Upon Me,” and “Live to Tell the Tale” quickly became popular throughout Emerson College, a private University in Boston, where Angelakos was attending. “I've Got Your Number” begins with a steady, rhythmic beat and sci-fi like synths backed by the passionate chorus that asks, “Have you seen me cry tears like diamonds / Down and down they fly / faster and faster like the speed of our love / Batting a thousand, but a homerun crack at love / This is where I tell you that / I know love's what I need to work at.” This heavily passionate track is followed by the fun, upbeat and cutely titled track, “Cuddle Fuddle.” This song shows the more vulnerable side of Angelakos' feelings proclaiming, “Oh my god just please don't ever let me go / Yeah sometimes we're high and sometimes we're low / Put up with me then I'll make you see / That things are better when you're with me.” This susceptible expression is followed by a quirky repeated reference to a fairy tale with, “Rapunzel Rapunzel / Let down your hair.” “Smile Upon Me” could be a song dedicated to any loved one be it your girlfriend, boyfriend, or best friend. It's an eclectic mastery of sentimental declaration amidst vibrant percussion and synthesizers. Angelakos writes a catchy anthem of a chorus with, “Oh yeah you're the best damn friend that I'll ever have / You'll always smile upon me when the seasons bad / You'll always make me feel best even when I'm blue / You'll always smile upon me and I'll smile upon you too.” Staying true to their signature build up, Passion Pit included “Live to Tell the Tale” on their debut EP. More toned down than the rest of the album, but not quite a ballad, “Live to Tell the Tale” plays like a Hallmark greeting card with lyrics like, “God bless that smile on your face / god bless the seeds in the ground / god bless my family's keen gaze.” Best Song That You Have Ever HeardFollowing the fifth song on the album, Passion Pit declares that “Better Things” will be the “best song that you have ever heard.” While it's not the best, it is certainly exceptional. This track is followed by the discovery download that the American iTunes store released on February 24, 2009, “Sleepyhead,” as well as a remix of this song. The single is also included on their first full length album, Manners. This concludes Passion Pit's debut EP, Chunk of Change. The band has opened for popular bands such as Death Cab for Cutie and RJD2. Check out their official website for additional tour news.
