British electronic trio, Depeche Mode, just signed a new deal with EMI and are currently working on their follow up to 2005's Playing the Angel.

Currently in New York working on their 12th studio album, Depeche Mode have signed an exclusive worldwide deal with EMI to distribute their forthcoming album, according to their record label. The album will be produced by Ben Hillier who also produced Playing the Angel, and should include new material written by lead singer David Gahan.

Depeche Mode on EMI

Since 1981, when the band released their first single “Dreaming of Me”, Depeche Mode have released their material via EMI’s Mute label. Under the new deal, EMI music will release all subsequent Depeche Mode albums worldwide, and for the first time in North America.

Depeche Mode Stadium Tour

Following the release of Depeche Mode’s new album, yet untitled, to be released on April 21, 2009, the avant-guard electronic band will embark on its first ever stadium tour.

The band has announced dates for the European leg of its "Tour of the Universe 2009", its first ever stadium tour which will bring them to 28 cities across 21 countries beginning in Tel Aviv, Isreal on May 10, and concluding in Oporto, Portugal on July 11. The band hasn’t toured since 2005’s "Touring the Angel" broke European sales records.

Depeche Mode History

The band formed in Basildon, England and quickly caught the attention of a new generation of pop fans who embraced the band’s alternative electronic sound. Throughout the last 25 years the band has grown not only to encompass the best of 80’s music, but have along the way become one of the most influential synth-based British pop bands in the world.

Depeche Mode shot to the upper echelons of the UK charts with many of their singles including fan favorites "Just Can’t Get Enough," "Everything Counts" and "People Are People" while American audiences know the band mostly for their late 80’s and early 90’s singles such as “Enjoy the Silence," "Personal Jesus" and "Policy of Truth" from their hugely successful Violator album.

Depeche Mode Albums

Over the course of their career, Depeche Mode have recorded 11 albums that, according to their label, have collectively sold more than 75 million copies worldwide, including Speak & Spell (1981), A Broken Frame (1982), Construction Time Again (1983) and Some Great Reward (1984).

In 1986 the band began their golden period which included that year’s Black Celebration followed by fan favorite Music for the Masses from 1987. In 1990 Depeche Mode released Violator, their most sucessful album to date which also spawned the international hits “World In My Eyes” and “Halo”.

1993’s Songs of Faith and Devotion changed direction to a more rock sound which proved less popular and accessible. The band returned to form for their last three albums, 1997’s Ultra, 2001’s Exciter, and 2005’s Playing the Angel, the last of which hit number 1 in 18 countries.

Depeche Mode’s new album is due out in North America on April 21, 2009.
