Depeche Mode iTunes Pass ReviewSounds of the Universe Expanded Including Videos and Remixes
Depeche Mode launch the first ever iTunes music pass offering fans their album Sounds of the Universe and a grab bag of other material for one low fee.
As the digital download leader, iTunes has offered fans of popular television shows season passes which allow them to download all available shows and add new ones as they air for a one time fee. In an attempt to shift this winning strategy to the music world, iTunes teamed up with the godfathers of industrial electronica, Depeche Mode, on the eve of the release of their twelfth studio album Sounds of the Universe to offer fans a chance to get not only the full album but a host of other DM-related goodies. As of the first week of May, the iTunes Pass included the entire Sounds of the Universe album, two non-album tracks in remix form, five remixes (four of first single “Wrong”), four videos as well as a separate EP containing additional remixes of three album tracks. At just under twenty dollars, the iTunes Sounds of the Universe Pass offers excellent value for the cost. It gives fans access to new releases as they occur and a sense of band fidelity so often missing in the digital download age. Wrong RemixesThe iTunes Depeche Mode Pass became available from the iTunes store several months before the April release of the new album. At that time, for just under $US20, fans were given the opportunity to download the band’s new single “Wrong” its companion video clip as well as a special remix of non-album track “Oh Well (Black Light Odyssey Dub)”. In the weeks that followed, new songs were added to the queue including “The Sun and the Moon and the Stars (Electronic Periodic's Microdrum Mix)” and “Miles Away / The Truth Is (Lagos Boys Choir Remix)”. Special mixes of first single “Wrong” were later added including the “Thin White Duke Remix”, “Magda's Scallop Funk Remix”, “D.I.M. vs. Boys Noize Remix” and “Trentemøller Remix Edit” as well as a documentary entitled “Sounds of the Universe - A Short Film” which brings fans into the studio with the band as they recorded Sounds of The Universe. Sounds Of The UniverseOn April 21, 2009, fans who had purchased the iTunes Depeche Mode Pass received the Sounds of the Universe album in its entirety as well as a special remix EP including “Jezebel (SixToes Remix)”, “Little Soul (Thomas Fehlmann Flowing Ambient Mix)” and “In Chains (Minilogue's Earth Remix)”. A few weeks later two more video clips joined the download queue, “Corrupt (Studio Session)” and “Little Soul (Studio Session)”. Sounds Of The Universe iTunes Pass UpdatesThe Depeche Mode iTunes Pass is still in effect and this section will be updated as more material becomes available. The Sounds of the Universe Pass is available exclusively via the iTunes Store in the United States.
